Popcorn Toppings

Happy Halloween guys! I hope everyone has lots of tiny trick-or-treaters tonight, that’s my favorite part of Halloween so I can’t wait. We’re going to pop some popcorn and watch a Halloween movie tonight after visiting Virginia (and MK and JD) in her pumpkin hat of course.

We don’t have a microwave so a while ago Andy ordered this popcorn maker. I wasn’t on board at first but now I love how it encourages us to use different toppings on our popcorn. And it’s much healthier than bagged popcorn too. I love parmesan and truffle salt on my popcorn but it isn’t Andy’s favorite so I think we may try some sriracha salt on half of our batch tonight. If you’re local my sister in law found a great little place, Salts of the Earth in the 7th street Market uptown. She brought us a bag full of different salts we’ve been trying. They’re all really interesting, thanks Jill! A few others options I added to my list to try too!

Sea salt and honey (via the Faux Martha)
Rosemary and parmesean (via Cup of Jo
Chinese 5-spice (via the Kitchn)
Paprika and parsley (via Serious Eats)
Cilantro and lime (via Bake Your Day)
Chocolate, coconut, caramel (via Top with Cinnamon) for dessert!

Any genius popcorn toppings? I also love throwing M&Ms into a bowl of hot popcorn, salty sweet + chocolate can't go wrong!

My Look, Her Look, Mom's Look

I think i've mentioned before how much I'm loving this green for fall so when I saw these pumps on sale I was sold. I knew they could be used so many different ways they are perfect for My Look, Her Look, Mom's look. Also this picture doesn't show the heel very well but it's snakeskin. I love the contrast of army green suede with the snakeskin!!
Blank Denim coated jeans, Cuyana sweater, Form over Function watch, Iaclli necklace, Forever 21 earrings and Mansur Gavriel handbag
I love coated jeans for the fall and something about the texture on these navy Blank Denim jeans combined with the casual feel of this oversized sweater is a perfect mix with these suede pumps. Lots of textures here but to me that is one of the best things about fall! Oh and that bag is my newest obsession. It's on my dream list.
J Brand jeans, Zara handbag, J.Crew sweater, Margaret Elizabeth earrings, and Karen Walker Sunglasses
Love how simple and classic this outfit is. These pumps may not seem overly "classic" in nature but paired with well fitting jeans, a classic bag and sweater - you're set. This outfit isn't overly complicated either because I'm guessing MK doesn't have much time on her hands getting dressed these days.
Ann Taylor blazer, Jaeger dress, Kate Spade earrings, Kelly Wearstler bracelet, Revlon lipstick, Kate Spade handbag and House of Harlow necklace
There is a lot of black happening in mom's look but that is my mom to a tee! And to be honest I love black too so I can't talk. This blazer has a little more color than is shown in the picture above and I think with gold jewelry and red lipstick it's just enough oomph for a this outfit.

How would you style these heels? I think they'd be so cute with a feminine tweed skirt too!

Limoncello

Confession - Andy and I watch Food Network and Cooking Chanel constantly. There's a good chance that if we're not watching sports a cooking show is on our TV. A while back on Extra Virgin (yes we even watch the shows that the rest of the world doesn't know exist) they made homemade Limoncello. The simplicity of the recipe inspired us to give it a try. It's so simple, take a look.

We followed this recipe. And because the recipe makes a good bit we've shared some with friends and have bookmarked a few of these recipes too.

Grilled Cheese Party

A few weeks ago MK talked about some of our favorite Fall foods but we neglected to include one of my absolute favorites, the perfect grilled cheese. I love a grilled cheese year round but it’s usually best in the fall when the melted cheese makes your entire body feel all warm and fuzzy. Oh and dipping it in the perfect tomato soup is bonus!  I love Gwyneth’s tomato soup and MK loves Giada’s too!

We did a little experimenting a few weeks ago with different combinations and came up with a few keepers below.

Three cheese (cheddar, gruyere and fontina) with pickled jalapenos (super easy to make homemade!)
Gruyere and granny smith apples
Fontina with prosciutto and red pepper flakes

We also decided that this would be perfect for a fall football party. You can have all your toppings and ingredients prepared in advance and then let everyone make their own grilled cheese on a panini press or cast iron skillet whenever they’re ready. Super casual but super accommodating because everyone gets exactly what they want. Perfect for a long day of football!

What’s your favorite combination?

PS I’m dying to try this one!

Tapletop Details

A few weeks ago, when Andy and I hosted Steak Club, I realized while setting my table that I didn’t have coasters. In my old apartment I used a hand me down table that we painted black so I never worried about water rings but now that we have a true dining room Andy and I are using my great grandmother’s dining room table which I don’t care to put water rings on. I’m hoping this table will last us forever! Post Steak club I quickly learned how to remove water rings (mayonnaise and toothpaste!) but it’s a trick I’m hoping I can forget. I’ve been on the hunt for cute coasters that are fun but actually useful ever since.

I’m not picky but our living room coasters are definitely more casual so I’d love something a little more suited for entertaining to use in the dining room. Also our table is wood and definitely more grown up so I’m thinking they I may need something with color or a little spunk to keep the vibe from getting too stuffy!

Here are a few options I’ve found.

Fall Beer Tasting

Last week a few of us got together to taste some Fall beers. We took notes so we could all determine our favorite. I decided Fall may be one of my favorite seasons for beer, there's so much flavor in a good fall beer and there's just nothing that compares to the taste of a good beer on a crisp fall day. We went to Good Bottle Co., which I highly recommend if you're local,  to get their expertise on some of the best fall options and were really pleased with the choices.

Here's a breakdown of what we tried and a few of our thoughts.

Southern Tier Harvest - hoppy, spicey brown ale
Abita Pecan Harvet Ale - nutty (hence the name!) but smooth and mellow
Anchor Big Leaf Maple - a mix beteween red and brown ale
Anderson Valley Fall Hornin' - full of fall spices, almost pie like with cinnamon and nutmeg (syrupy)
Atwater Vanilla Java Porter - chocolate and vanilla with too much imitation flavor (more wintery)
Omme Gang Scythe and Sickle Harvest Ale - perfect fall beer, full of spice and flavor
Victory Golden Monkey - spicier wheat beer
Hofbrau Oktoberfest - traditional smooth Octoberfest
Downtown Brown - dark, typical caramel brown flavor
Dogfish Head Punkin Ale - good solid pumpkin flavor, not too strong or syrupy
Blue Point Toasted Lager - standard toasted lager but a bit heavier

We've also heard Sierra Nevada Flipside is good so I may pick that up next time as well as a Noda Brewery Pumpkin Ale if you're local.

So what are your favorite Fall beers? We'd love to try them!

Fall Espadrilles

In the South, fall feels a lot different than what most people imagine. It's October yet it's still pretty warm here in North Carolina. I tend to dress for the season more than the weather because otherwise my wardrobe would be pretty one dimensional. By mid September I'm ready to ditch my sandals for more closed toe shoes and I've found espadrilles to be the perfect transition shoe. The light weight material is perfect for warm days but still mentally helps me get ready for fall with the closed toe.

I think I've mentioned before my love for this army green color, but they'd be equally as cute in a navy or red too! These are actually my first pair of espadrilles and it's probably no surprise that I love them. They're cute, comfortable and such a great price too. What's not to love for $39?! Check out Rope and Canvas for more colors and the story behind this great company!

Scenes from the Weekend

Good news guys, MK's little girl decided she was ready for the real world. She arrived Friday afternoon and proved to be the cutest, sweetest little girl I've ever seen in my entire life. Promise I'm not biased! MK and baby are happy, healthy and resting at home as much as possible. Just a few pics from our exciting weekend for now. MK may share more with you at some point but for now just imagine the sweetest face you've ever seen in that precious little white gown with three tiny pink flowers along the collar, crossing her tiny arms as her mom carries her out of the hospital. The cutest!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday Everyone! We are still waiting patiently (kinda) for MK's little girl to arrive over here! We don't have any real plans for the weekend for that reason. But Andy and I do have plans for a little date night at home one evening this weekend. We're making steak and potatoes, Andy's favorite!  Oh we're hoping to pick out some pumpkins this weekend too, yay fall!

Any big plans for the weekend? I hope it's a good one!

A few things I bookmarked this week...

Loving the concept of Uprise Art. You can buy artwork now or invest-over-time! (via The Everygirl)

Everything Jamie Beck does is gorgeous but I really loved this little recent glimpse into photographing NYFW.

If you aren't already following The Glamourai, I suggest you start now (on Instagram too). Her recent travels around Asia may have settle my little internal debate over places for our next trip.

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend.

Rebecca Atwood Textiles

One of the many reason I LOVE Instagram is discovering new people. I discovered Rebecca Atwood a little while ago and lately I am seeing her work everywhere! Rightly so everything she does is gorgeous!
Rebecca is a Brooklyn based artist and designer specializing in one of a kind textiles. She blends traditional textile making and hand painting to create a truly unique product. Her work is inspired by her daily life in New York as well as her childhood growing up in Cape Cod. And to top it all off, she strongly supports the survival of traditional textile techniques and donates a portion of her proceeds to Aid to Artisans.Aren't these amazing? I would love some of these on my sofa. Something about her work is dark and moody in the best way possible. I just love it all.  Her work is sold at Furbish in Raleigh, NC for anyone that's local!

Denim on Denim

A few weeks ago the weather cooled just enough for us to pull our TV out to the back porch and have some friends over for a little Tennessee game day fun. Denim on denim was the perfect casual option for a day full of football. Denim on Denim can be a little intimidating though, here are a few rules that can help with the look.

1. Mix and match washes and shades (try patterned, colored and coated denim too!)
2. Use a belt to break up the blues
3. Watch your proportions. Keep it loose on top if your jeans are tight or vice versa (fit in general is key here)
3. Add some texture with jewelry or a scarf

The goal here isn't to look perfectly put together, this look isn't a science its more thrown together. If you're still not sure try your favorite black jeans with a chambray shirt, think of it as denim on denim for beginners! Just so happens to be a Sunday staple for me too.

You know I had to sneak in a little orange for gameday! Wearing my favorite "new" belt stolen from Andy's side of the closet. The perfect Tennessee orange checkerboard!!

What do you think? Do you wear denim on denim?

- Heath

PS more talk about gameday outfits here!

Christina Jervey Handcrafted Jewelry

I typically stick to a jewelry "uniform" when I get ready in the morning.  I just about wear the same two bracelets and my go to gold oval hoop earrings almost every day, every now and then switching up my earrings.  Heath's really good about mixing and matching jewelry, combining jewelry to dress up a basic black pencil skirt for work and then using the same pieces to dress up casual outfits on weekends.  She turned me on to Christina Jervey's Jewelry and all of these pieces really make me want to pay more attention to jewelry.

Chritina Jervey's pieces look classic, but they still have a little edginess to them.  Christy studied metalsmithing at Penland School of Craft and currently creates and designs all of her pieces in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, just outside of Charleston.  Her pieces are inspired by nature and show a definite appreciation for simplicity and detail.  I could see myself wearing just about all of them.

She also does AMAZING custom work.  Just about every other day I see something on her Instagram feed that I'm in love with.  If you're in the market for a custom piece, a stack ring, or even an interesting wedding band, I'd give her a call!  I'm sure she would come up with something far more beautiful than what you would see at your everyday jeweler.
