Teil Duncan

You may remember MK talked about Teil Duncan's work here a while back. She's super talented (and Southern!) and I'm happy to report that she is just the cutest little thing you've ever seen in person too! Over the fourth of July, while Andy and I were visiting friends in Charleston we also visited Teil's studio and picked out the piece above for my birthday. It was so much fun meeting Teil and so cool to see where all her gorgeous pieces are created.

I love love love how the piece turned out. I still can't believe it's mine!

I'm not sure if we've found a permanent home for her yet but I'm really loving having her perched in front of this mirror for now. This chest is seen from the dining room, kitchen and living room so I'm loving that we can see her no matter where we are. Go check out all of Teil's amazing pieces here! I love everything she does so I can't wait to see what she comes up with this fall.

Happy Friday

Happy Friday everyone!  I hope everyone has had a wonderful week.  This week flew by for me which is so nice considering I'm now just counting down the days until our little girl arrives!  We don't have much on the agenda this weekend which is so nice.  This evening J.D. and I are going to finally get a real "grown up" camera.  Finally!  (Don't you think we're cutting it a little close?  I'm typically SO bad about taking pictures.  The only other camera I've ever owned was one my mom gave J.D. when he asked for my parents blessing to marry me.  My mom knew I would regret not having a camera and pictures from our engagement!)

Saturday morning I'm heading out to get mums to welcome fall around our house, and then Heath and Andy are coming for a very low key day to watch Tennessee football.  Other than that, JD and I will just be enjoying what we hope is our last weekend as a family of two!

Hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!

~Mary Keller

Steak Club Lee Bros. Edition

On Saturday night we went over to a friend's house for Steak Club and now I'm pretty much obsessed with the Lee Brothers.  Our hosts served a side and a dessert from their cookbook, and they both were pretty much perfect.  For drinks the girls enjoyed lots of wine, and the boys enjoyed too much bourbon.  (I think it's fair to call our hosts bourbon connoisseurs.  They have just about every bourbon you can imagine to choose from.  This makes J.D. very happy since at home he has to enjoy the cheap stuff!)

For the main course we each enjoyed our steaks off the grill, a simple fall tossed salad and the real showstopper, a Pimento Cheese Potato Gratin.  It was as delicious as it sounds.  I think we all scrapped the dish clean.  This dish is from the Lee Bros. Simple Fresh Southern Cookbook, and it's also floating around the internet a few places including Saveur.  (Bonus, this can be made in advance!)

Lee Bros. Pimento Cheese Potato Gratin via Saveur
3 teaspoons salt, plus more to taste
1 1⁄2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1⁄4-inch thick rounds
3⁄4 cup heavy cream
3 shallots, finely diced (scant 1⁄2 cup)
1⁄4 teaspoon crushed dried red chile flakes
1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
One 9-ounce jar roasted red peppers or piquillo peppers, with their liquid
8 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, coarsely grated (about 2 cups)

Heat the oven to 375°F, racks positioned in the middle and the top third of the oven. In a 3- to 4-quart stockpot, bring 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons of the salt to a boil. Add the potatoes and cook for 10 minutes. Drain and set them aside.

Combine the cream, shallots, chile flakes, remaining 1 teaspoon salt, the black pepper, and 2 tablespoons of the liquid from the jar of roasted peppers in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook until the chile flakes have begun to stain the cream, about 2 minutes. Add half of the cheese and stir until it melts, about 1 minute. Remove pan from the heat.

Layer a third of the potatoes in a 6-cup baking dish, overlapping them slightly so that they fit in an even layer. Scatter half of the roasted peppers on top of the potatoes (cut up any peppers that have remained whole so that they lie flat), and repeat layering potatoes and peppers until all the peppers and potatoes have been used. Pour the cream mixture over the potatoes and peppers, and agitate the dish to distribute the liquid throughout. Cover with aluminum foil and bake on the middle rack for 15 minutes.

Uncover the dish, sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top, and place the dish on the top oven rack. Bake for 8 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and gently browned on top. Serve immediately, and enjoy!

For dessert we had little buttermilk cakes topped with bourbon soaked peaches.  So so good, and thinking about all this makes me hungry.  I highly recommend giving the potato gratin a try.  (Wouldn't it be good with an Easter ham?  Something different from traditional mac & cheese.)  Our host couldn't say enough good things about the Lee Bros. cookbook in general.  I love their fresh take on old school southern cuisine.  Has anyone else tried a good recipe by the Lee Brothers?  Hope you enjoy this one!

My Look, Her Look, Mom's Look

You guys this dress is on sale at Old Navy right now for $20. You read that right! I love a good comfortable dress that can be dressed up with shoes and accessories but is cozy enough to wear all day. I think this dress is so versatile that's why I picked it for September's My Look, Her Look, Mom's Look series.
Gap jacket, Michael Kors watch, Marc by Marc jacobs scarf, Mardwell tote, Page Sargisson earrings and Rag and Bone booties
I kept my look pretty casual to show how this dress is perfect for all day. I love how this crisp black and white dress transforms with suede booties, a leather tote and a perfect light weight jacket. I'm loving this army green color for this fall it seems to make almost any outfit a little more interesting.
Clark's booties, Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, Loft belt, Odette bracelets, Madewell earrings and Juicy Couture necklace
I am really loving MK's look this month! The bow on that belt is feminine but the leather makes it not TOO girly. I'm seeing bucket bags everywhere right now and I love them but the color on this one completely sold me. And my absolute favorite pair of booties are Clark's, (they're not ugly I promise) they're super comfortable and cute. So I ordered these booties(above) as soon as I found them online. If they are anywhere near as comfortable I am sold! You should probably all run out and get them NOW!
Jennifer Meyer earrings, Asha necklace, Joan and David shoes, Zara handbag and blazer
Mom's outfit is pretty typical with her red blazer, my mom LOVES red if you haven't caught on yet. I know she would wear these shoes all the time, she also loves basic blacks. I love the tiny little gold heel but I'm really obsessed with the tortoise pattern on these

Don't you think this dress could be worn a million ways? A casual look for me, dressier and modern for MK or pretty traditional and classic with mom's look. Love a versatile piece like this!

Fall Lipstick & Nail Polish Picks

Heath and I asked my good friend (and legit make up artist) Carrie LaMarca to clue us in on the hot colors for fall this year.  Carrie seriously always has the best picks and tips!

With these suggestions, I've decided to make a little mini-resolution to pick up a fresh new lip and nail color every fall and spring.  This may seem pretty minor, but I'm not a make up or product junkie and I rarely switch up my routine.  Since I'm a little over a week from having a baby, I'm not exactly feeling like my best self right now.  I'm hoping that a fresh color for the new season will help me stay at least a little trendy and prevent me from turning into a frumpy mom so soon!

Fall Lipstick Selections:
Poppy Red - for a fresh take on red, try Revlon Matte Lipstick "Really Red"

It looks like a Matte finish is really in this year.  Carrie points out that if you have any of these shades in a glossy finish, instead of buying new just dust translucent powder over the top of your lips for a matte finish.  This will also help with the lipstick's staying power!

Hot Nail Colors for Fall:
Emerald Green - try Butter London's British Racing Green (love this name!)

For me personally, I love lipstick and usually stick to reds in the fall and winter months but I think I'm going to switch it up and try a pretty burgundy.  I'm less trendy with my nails, and typically tend to stick to a neutral, but I'm loving the Emerald Green for a pedicure.  What about you guys?  What are you liking for fall?

P.S.  Check out Carrie's impressive portfolio here.  As always Carrie, THANK YOU for helping us try to be hip and beautiful! :)

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday guys!  I hope everyone had a good week, it definitely flew by for me.  Andy and I are heading to Atlanta this weekend to visit some friends who recently moved. We're so excited to catch up with some friends that we don't get to see as often as we would like!  MK and JD will be heading to a friends house for steaks and surely will enjoy one of their last weekends as just a couple of two before baby arrives!

A few things I bookmarked this week...

Absolutely in love with Eden East. Definitely adding to my list of things to try next time we visit friends in Austin. (via Camille Styles)

Loving these snippet's of Amber's recent project.

Loving all of these ideas for ways to make a beautiful bed, via I Suwannee.

Wish HowAboutWe for Couples was available in Charlotte!  These look like such fun date night ideas, via Oh Happy Day.

Hope everyone enjoys a perfect early fall weekend!

Label Love: Troubadour

I first saw the clothing label Troubadour on Olivia Rae James' blog Everyday Musings and I fell in love with all of these gorgeous shots!  Then, I recently spied another gorgeous dress by Troubadour on A Piece of Toast's blog and instagram feed this week.  I'm seriously in love!  These pieces are exactly how I wish I could dress everyday!  There is something about them that is classic and feminine, but they are still really interesting and unique.  Plus, the designer lives in Charleston so it's nice to support a southern designer!  Check out the entire collection here

Favorite Fall Dinners

Last spring, Heath and I came up with a list of all of our favorite warm weather meals.  I loved referring to these lists because I actually made of point of making my favorite dinners (I always forget what recipes JD and I really like!) and the list gave me ideas when I was in a dinner rut.  Now that things are finally starting to cool down, Heath and I have made a new list of our fall favorites, and a few new things we'd like to try.  What are your favorites that we should add to the line up?

 Dinner & Lunch Favorites:
Ina's Mexican Chicken Soup - this may be my all time favorite!  It's perfect for entertaining (especially served with jalapeno cornbread) and it's so yummy.  Heath's husband Andy is a little foodie and he requested this for his bday dinner.  That means it really is good.
Giada's hearty tomato soup with Rosemary with Classic Grilled Cheese - make a double or even triple batch of soup because you'll want leftovers.  Quick enough for a weeknight meal, and it's more substantial than most tomato soups because it has white beans and carrots.
Pasta and Provisions Seasonal Pumpkin Ravioli and Butternut Squash Ravioli - if you're in Charlotte, you have to pick up a bag of frozen ravioli to have on hand.  It's super cheap, and super delicious for a seasonal meal.
Ina's Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Curry Condiments - I love this interesting soup with all of it's fun toppings (banana, coconut, scallions, cashews.)  Her Butternut and Apple soup looks delish too.
Gwyneth's White Bean Soup with Kale - this is on heavy weeknight rotation in our house.  Quick, delicious and healthy!
Giada's Rigatoni with Steak - this maybe JD's favorite.  It's a great way to stretch a steak, and is so perfect with red wine when it's chilly.

Sweet Treats and Drinks:
Smitten Kitchen's Apple Cider Doughnuts - I've never tried homemade doughnuts (they're a little intimidating!) but these sound so yummy for a fall weekend morning.
Apple Cider Caramel's - these may sound a little intimidating too, but I think they're easier than they look.  Smitten Kitchen's description of these delicious looking caramels is enough to have me sold.
Apple Rye Punch - Apple Cider is on the tippity top of my fall favorites, so an apple cider cocktail sounds pretty much perfect, especially one like this that doesn't sound too sweet.

Alright, what are we missing?  We'd seriously love to hear your go to fall favorites.  I'd love to add them to my own rotation.
p.s. 11 ways to use canned pumpkin this fall if you're interested!

Gameday Gear

Barbour vest via Tuckernuck, J Brand jeans, H&M sweater, Gap t-shirt and Sam Edelman booties
With football season in full swing I've been thinking about gameday outfits. We unfortunately aren't attending any Tennessee games this year but we still support our team from Charlotte or wherever we are on Saturdays so I'm always brainstorming good gameday gear. I've been trying to find these jeans ever since I saw them, if you find them let me know! I think they'd be perfect this fall with chunky sweaters and my favorite booties
Madewell boots, H&M sweater, Gap jacket, J.Crew skirt, Shashi bracelet via ShopBop and unknown scarf
I tend to stay away from skirts outside of work for whatever reason but this skirt has me rethinking that. It's interesting but classic and I LOVE that olive color! I actually love all the colors in this round up, they're all neutrals (except the orange) if you ask me and are even better when all paired together. And how versatile is that quilted moto jacket?
J Brand jeans, Madewell blouse, H&M cardigan, Holst and Lee necklace via ShopBop, J.Crew Factory flats and B-Low the Belt Leaf belt via ShopBop
This outfit may not seem super festive for gameday but I think it would be perfect for a night out when you don't want to look too collegiate. When we're not attending the game there's a fine line to me in being too festive when we're so many miles away! I'll probably be sporting something similar most Saturdays and if I'm lucky these pants will become a part of my wardrobe soon. You can't see the finish in the photo above but it's so cool!

What is your go to game day outfit? I'd love to hear!

- Heath

PS we just got tickets to a Panthers game for later this year so now I'm hunting for some blue clothing that isnt overly cheesy. Can't wait!

Tailgate Time!

It doesn't take much other than good food (and booze!) to throw a really fun tailgate, but we've gathered a few things that may take the fun and style up a notch.  I think a tailgate should always feel pretty casual to really be fun, but cute paper products are a must.  Tervis tumblers, a classic cooler, and an acrylic beverage tub are all good tailgate essentials.  This beer making kit looks like fun, but so far this season Andy and J.D. have been all talk when it comes to homemade brew.  Add a good yard game like cornhole and everyone's happy.  If your tailgate is a little later in the year, I love the idea of this portable bonfire log that burns for an hour and a half and these cute twig marshmallow roasters.  Maybe smores during halftime?!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone!  So excited the weekend is here!  Today's a happy Friday because during lunch we got to see our final ultrasound and then after work I have a long overdue pre-natal massage/facial gift card that I get to use!  yea!!  Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.  Our weekend will be quiet as we plan to finish up lots of little things before baby comes.  Tomorrow morning JD and I are having a breakfast date with homemade huevos rancheros and our little monthly budget meeting (we're dorks!).  Then tomorrow afternoon, I think Heath's planning a cookout for the Tennessee game so we may get a yummy meal out of that.  Other than that, we'll just be relaxing and watching DVDs of Homeland.  We're late to the game, but we're now obsessed!

I'm obsessed with this Anthropologie Equus Dress that Sally wore at New York Fashion Week, and I'm loving everyone's recap of the week.

If you missed it, I'm in love with these midi skirts that Heath posted about.  I had never even heard of midi skirts until then.  One of these may be at the top of my list when I do some post baby shopping!

Love Jess Lively's take on seasonal planning, it's similar to what Heath and I put together earlier this week, but a bit more goal oriented.

Fall's IT Item | Midi Skirt

You may remember back in May we talked about Summer's IT item well now Summer has come and gone it's time to start thinking about our Fall wardrobe. I'm thinking this Fall is the Fall of midi skirt. I'm not over the moon with the name these skirts are given but I love how wearable they are for day and night. I also love how they are part fresh and modern and part feminine and old fashioned. There's a wide variety of these skirts available this fall too so I'm betting there's one for everyone.

I’m anxious to try a flowing midi skirt this fall. It’s a little out of my norm but I love how fancy they can feel with high heels and how casual and comfortable they can feel with a t-shirt and flats. These are the most versatile if you ask me and the easiest to wear for most figures. I’m pretty sure everyone has a hand full of blouses already in their closet that would be perfect with this style skirt. I found a few options here, here, here and here.
I usually prefer a fitted skirt. I tend to wear lose blouses and sweaters so a pencil skirts counteract that fit well. I actually own a green tweed midi skirt I’ve had for ages. It’s an old favorite that makes me feel so tall and lean. That’s the beauty of a midi skirt to me. They really elongate your body with the right fit. Find some here, here, here and here.
The fuller styles can be a bit tricky but with the right fit can be super flattering. Petite figures especially need to make sure the length and fullness doesn’t overwhelm your body. The him on a full skirt needs to hit at a flattering point on your leg so this is one of those items that you may have to get altered to hit in just the right spot. Don’t let that deter you a simple tweak can cost next to nothing and is super easy for a tailor. Find some options here, here, here and here

What do you think? Will you be wearing a midi skirt this fall?

A Well Accessorized Kitchen

Our kitchen renovation is really just about complete but I really need a few new accessories to bring the space to life!  We're loving using the new kitchen, and with the exception of just a few things (a new loveseat & chair for the seating area, and a new pendant over our table) everything is complete!  Looking at our kitchen reminds me of how important accessories are to a space.  Here are a few on my list...

We try to support a local olive oil shop, Pour Olive, just up the street from us for our specialty olive oil, but this Glass Oil Dispenser would be the perfect addition to keep our cheapie Bertolli Olive Oil that we use daily.  These inexpensive wooden bowls would be perfect for countertop kosher salt, and this spoon rest would hopefully keep me from ruining our new counter tops!  I'm usually pretty frugal on things like soaps and lotions, but we swear by Mrs. Meyers cleaning products.  They stay out on our counter tops next to the sink so they look pretty, and my dishwasher (J.D.) swears they are better than when I buy the cheaper stuff.  A little plant in the kitchen adds so much life, and ever since I laid eyes on this project of Jamie's features in HGTV magazine, I've been wanting a pair of Staffordshire Dogs to tuck in my kitchen book shelves!

Current Crush: Shark's Teeth!

Has anyone else noticed a trend lately of beautiful shark's tooth objects?  Sounds a little strange, but I've been seeing a handful of beautiful jewelry designers with amazing shark's tooth pieces and just recently on Instagram I saw the coolest framed shark's tooth series by artist Kate Roebuck.  I think I'm really loving all this shark's tooth action.  They're graphic and a little edgy, and these framed pieces almost remind me of a series of Hugo Guinness pieces.  I think these framed pieces would be the perfect quirky item to add to a bookshelf or gallery wall, and they're really well priced.  I'm considering one for a little powder room.  What do you think?  Weird or cool?!

Fall Planning

Is it ridiculous to start planning for fall already?  I know the season isn't even technically here, but we've already put together our list of "must dos" and a few goals to make the most of the season.  Otherwise, the season will come and go too quickly!  (Kinda like how summer came and went with me only having one shrimp boil and NO homemade peach cobbler somehow!)

Heath's list has all of the traditional fall favorites - football, pumpkins, bourbon! - plus a few good goals.  My list is all about BABY!  This fall will be very different for me compared to most.  I'll consider this fall the best if we only manage to check off number one on our list, welcoming our sweet baby girl in October!  If we manage to get her in a Halloween costume, purchase a pumpkin, actually cook any meal and get her birth announcements out, that will all just be a bonus.  And I'm embarrassed that I've even written that I'd like to get my Christmas shopping and Christmas cards organized this fall, but those are always my fall goals.  I know it seems too early, but getting this done in the fall leads to a better December for me.

What are we forgetting?  Any fall favorites or fall traditions that you love?  We're ready for cooler temps and this change in season!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you had a nice short work week. Andy and I flew to Chicago last night so ours was extra short.  As you’re reading this I’m strolling the streets of Chicago most likely with a crazy big smile on my face. Chicago has been my number one place to visit in the U.S. for a while now and yesterday we finally made it happen. I seriously haven’t been this excited since my honeymoon! We don’t have a lot planned for the weekend but we are catching a game at Wrigley which we’re pretty excited about. We may do a architectural boat tour and walk through the Lincoln Park Zoo but otherwise I’m hoping to wander through all the different neighborhoods, eat some delicious food and get a good feel for the city.

Hope you guys have a fun weekend!

Fall Trend: Leather Minis

I'm probably not the first to tell you this but leather is SO in this fall. I'm loving it so much lately so i'm super excited about seeing it everywhere. I've always been a lover of leather handbags but i'm particularly loving all the leather mini skirts I'm seeing in Fall collections. First thoughts of leather minis may lead you down a rough road, but I think with a classic top its easy to make these minis more appropriate and an easy way to update your fall wardrobe.
Tinley Road, Susana Monaco, T by Alexander Wang and Tinley Road
I love this quilted version above. The clean lines keep it simple and allow you to wear pretty much anything with it. I'd pair this one with a printed silk blouse and black booties. Or you could make it more casual with black flat boots and soft sweater
Halogen, Theory, Love Leather and Tinley Road
This is my favorite color family when it comes to leather. I think this skirt lends itself to be the perfect match of a chambray or flannel shirt for the day with some navy flats or a crisp white collared shirt for the evening.
Diane Von Furstenburg, Rachel Roy, Rag and Bone and Madewell
This skirt is just too good, I'm obsessed with the details. I love the quirky hem and the hint of blue on the pocket! With this one I'd either play up the details with an fun blouse or keep it simple with a not too basic silk blouse. Either way it would be equally perfect with sky high black heels or a simple flat

I'm also loving some of the deeper fall color options available like this and this

What do you think? Would you wear a leather mini?

Dream Vacation - Driving the Coast of Maine

Growing up in South Carolina, most of our family beach vacations were spent along the low country Carolina coast.  (Most summer vacations were in Pawley's Island/Litchfield Beach, and we love this no-frills, laid back area of the coast!)  Heath spent a summer in college as a nanny in Northeast Harbor, Maine and I'm dying to take a summer vacation sometime to Maine's coast for a change in scenery.

I'd like to fly into Boston and spend a weekend in the city.  Then, we'd pick up our rental car (a Jeep preferably, cheesy but we have to be able to ride with the top down!) and take our time weaving in and out of Maine's charming coastal towns stopping in at least Kennebunkport, Freeport and then Bar Harbor.  In each little fishing town, I'd like to stay in a traditional New England old fashioned, charming bed and breakfast or resort such as the White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport.

Kayu's Perfect Clutches

Have any of you guys heard of the brand Kayu?  Heath and I keep spying images of her gorgeous clutches on Istagram and we're hooked!  Truthfully, I really don't wear clutches all that often. I wear them sometimes if I'm going out to dinner, going out for the evening, or attending a wedding. Since I don't wear a clutch with much frequency, I need it to be classic and never really go out of style for me to fall in love with one. I also want it to be unique and different, otherwise, it's not worth spending the money.  All of Kayu's designs have really interesting materials and rich colors, but the best thing is I don't think they will ever really date themselves.  I can see both me and my grandmother liking these, which means that they really are pretty timeless!

Which would you pick?!  They also have a few super cute totes on sale, and a handful of sunglasses too.

Happy Labor Day!

Hope everyone is doing something fun and relaxing today, and ideally not spending too much time in front of the computer!  We're enjoying the last few hours of our Labor Day vacation and then we'll pack up and head home to Charlotte.
